Confused between Heat or Cold Therapy?

I still remember, when I tried to ride my bike first time without training wheels, I fell with big bruise and swelling around my knee; and my mom applied ice from refrigerator to heal the pain.  Just like that when my grandma was having her backpain she used to apply a hot water bag to relieve her pain.

Many times in our life, we strain a muscle, or sprain ligament; having minor back pain or suffering from neck pain after waking up.  For minor pain like this we usually try home remedies of cold or heat therapy before consulting our Physiotherapists.

Now question is what is best to apply during your pain; does hot therapy works best or does cold therapy give you more relief?  Well, in many cases heat can work better than cold therapy and in other cases it can be vice versa.

So in this blog we will give you our generic view on which therapy you should apply when you have minor or initial stage pain.

Strain a Muscle

Have you strain (or pulled) a muscle or injured a tendons in your back, thigh or calf and your muscle is swollen or redness?

Have you sprain a ligament in join while playing a sport or other activity in your knee, ankle, foot or elbow and its hurting?

  • Then its best to apply Cold therapy or Ice Pack. Applying ice pack will help you to reduce your throbbing headache and possibly numbs your acute pain.
  • Once your pain is reduced or numbs then apply Moist Heat Pack around your injured area. This will help to relax your painful neck muscle.
